Hello again guys and gals. There’s only one topic on today’s sports menu: round 1 of the NFL draft. Let’s chow down.
I’m going to start with the Jets. My initial reaction last night was, “What the f@#k was that?? Did you seriously just take 2 more defensive players?” I’m a little calmer today, but still not sold on what they did. I wouldn’t have minded 1 defensive player, but 2 to me is just silly. Your offense is so inept, you need help absolutely everywhere. And instead of addressing it with at least 1 of your 2 very high draft picks, it once again goes untouched. If you remember correctly, in my draft preview, my opinion for the Jets was to take OG Chance Warmack at 9 and OLB/DE Jarvis Jones at 13. And if you watched the draft last night, that very well could have happened. Both players were available at the spots I suggested. Neither was taken.
I went to bed quite aggravated last night and also quite hungry. (I’m not sure why you needed to know that, but it was important to me at the time, so there it is) However, after listening to all of my wonderful sports talk radio this morning, I actually feel somewhat better about the draft choices. A lot of experts were quite alright with how the Jets did, and I’ll admit, it eased my mind. Plus like one of them said, this team needs help everywhere, and it’s not a 1 year fix. Good point sir.
Dee Milliner is great. I remember watching him all season doing work against teams. Plus a potential top 5 pick that slips to you, how do you pass him up? Ok, I get it. Sheldon Richardson is still what puzzles me somewhat though. I understand DT is a little weaker now that Pouha is gone, and that the Jets don’t seem too keen on Kendrick Ellis, but you still have ZERO pass rushers. Unless they find a hidden gem in the later rounds, I still say Jarvis Jones was the perfect fit. Who took him? The Steelers. The Steelers defense is always dominant. And they also seem to always have 2 above average/great pass rushers. See a connection here? Yes, the Jets defense always finishes in the top 10 lately, but imagine how good they’d be if opposing offenses had a true pass rushing threat to worry about. I’ve heard some good things on Richardson this morning, but still not enough to make me think he was a better pick than Jones. Sorry.
From what I’ve heard today, the Jets seem interested in moving up in the second round for a QB. I’m not totally in love with any of the QB’s this year (although I wouldn’t have minded the Jets grabbing E.J. Manuel. Oh well). I will say this though, Geno Smith seems like a much more interesting pick after last night. This dude must have one hell of a chip on his shoulder after slipping all the way out of the 1st round. And big chips can lead to big careers. I mean, shoot, Aaron Rodgers slipped to the 20′s in his draft, and that guy is still pissed at all the teams that overlooked him. Don’t take that as me saying Geno Smith is the next Aaron Rodgers, I’m just making my point. I did not want the Jets taking a QB in the 1st, but now that there’s a couple of potentially good QB’s in the second; game on.
Now on to my beloved Giants. Poor Justin Pugh. If he had seen my face when I heard his name announced last night he would have been crushed. Or just crushed me, either one. That pick was exactly what I described it would be in my draft preview. Nothing sexy, but someone who will probably have a big impact. I still would have liked the Giants to go after some defensive help. CB Desmond Trufant or LB Alec Ogletree. My Gosh, even DT Shariff Floyd dropped all the way down to them! But they chose an O-lineman instead, and I’ll just assume they know a little bit more than me about all this.
However, I sincerely hope that they address their defense tonight. There’s still a few LB’s that I would gladly take, and one of them is Manti Te’o. I don’t care about the hoax. It was completely ridiculous and a part of me still thinks he was in on it to some degree. But be that as it may. The dude can play football. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the list of awards he won this year alone. He ran a 4.8 40. Who cares!? That didn’t seem to matter much during his Notre Dame career. The guy’s a baller and I will be very happy if he falls to the Giants in the second round. Defense, defense defense for the G-Men.
So that’s it and that’s all for now folks. I’ll be back next week to recap the rest of the draft and possibly talk a little basketball. But only if there’s time. I love football.
